Making a Difference

VOLUNTEERING
.
WHAT IS VOLUNTEERING?
It has always been in people's nature to help.
Volunteering is certainly not new and it's essence has never changed.
There is a growing recognition of volunteering and its value to the community.

VOLUNTEERING CONTAINS THREE ELEMENTS :

  • it is done by choice - of one's own free will

  • it is done without payment

  • it is to the benefit of the community

VOLUNTEERING SHOULD BE A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE

VOLUNTEERING TAKES TWO FORMS:
Informal (outside of organisations)
part of our community life
carries risks such as over-involvement, inappropriate involvement
and potential for emotional and physical harm

Formal (within an organisation)
offers the benefit of appropriate insurance cover,
support, training, guidance and recognition

The Golden Retriever Club of SA Inc offers the benefit of formal volunteering

AROUND ONE IN FOUR AUSTRALIANS ARE CURRENTLY VOLUNTEERING.

YOUR COMMITMENT

It is expected our Active volunteers would give a commitment of at least 1 hour per fortnight of their time to visit a Residential Aged Care Home in their local area.

This commitment would be on a regular appointment time basis.
Once a routine is established, residents really look forward to that special time
they spend with you and your dog and are disappointed and anxious if you do not keep that appointment. (Of course, changes can be made to that time with communication to the Home)

Your commitment also is to always ensure your CARING CANINE COMPANION is suitable for the visit - clean, well groomed and healthy.

YOUR RIGHTS

  • to be covered by insurance (which is arranged by us)

  • to receive out of pocket expenses

  • to be protected from excessive demands (learn to say NO)

  • to be kept informed

  • to receive training if necessary

  • to be recognised for the great work you do.

  •

    YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • to believe in the value of what you are doing

  • to be loyal and respect confidentially given information

  • to be dependable (if you can't then let us know)

  • to discuss concerns with our co-ordinator in the first instance

  •

    YOUR JOB SPECIFICATION

  • Primarily to befriend a nursing home resident who may have limited or no contact with family, friends, or the community outside the nursing home

  • To ensure your canine companion is clean and always well under your control

  • To visit at least once a fortnight

  • To keep confidentialities

  • To be accepting and non-judgemental on those you access

  • Not to become involved in personal care or therapy

  • not to undertake nursing tasks (in particular, lifting of residents)

  • To communicate with the Home and/or co-ordinator regarding illness, holidays or inability to visit regularly.

  • To attend, whenever possible, support and training sessions as provided by us

  • To provide to the co-ordinator a record of your attendances at the Home by using the Visit Report Form provided by us.

  •

    RECOGNITION

  • When successful at assessment, volunteers are provided a Certificate for their dogs.

  • We make every endeavour to recognise the commitment and dedication of our volunteers both in the public arena and amongst  peers.

  • We provide badged polo shirts and windcheaters for our volunteers

  • We provide leads, collars and medallions for our CARING CANINE COMPANIONS

  • We provide a badged waist bag for our volunteers to use when visiting (to carry tidbits and car keys etc)
