Golden Retriever Club of South Australia INC

GRCSA - 2005 Champ Show Critique

 6th AUGUST 2005

JUDGE:  MR J RICHARDSON (U K)

I consider it a great privilege to judge for the Golden Retriever Club of South Australia.  I thought the venue was perfect for such a breed show and it was well laid out.  The day ran smoothly and I must thank my Stewards.  Had a super lunch.

Thought the ring was slightly on the big side.  A slightly smaller ring would bring the Show closer together and create more ringside atmosphere.  The Exhibitors seemed to be very sporting.

I considered most of the exhibits to be of excellent or very good quality.  Goldens in the U.K. and most countries possess more substance (not fat) and perhaps this needs consideration by some exhibitors.

I apologise for getting the ribbons mixed up in the first two classes.  Every country I have judged in the red ribbon is for 1st place and the blue for 2nd..

Thanks for excellent hospitality during my stay in Adelaide.

Jim Richardson.

BABY PUPPY DOG

First –Beaucroft  Knls.   ACACIAN SOCIAL EVENT.   This boy is a bit special.  Very altogether for one so young.  Good typical head and expression. Super forehand; very strong, well-angulated quarters.  Well ribbed and strong body.  Moved soundly and with confidence. Very promising.

Second – Ashiya Knls.  ASHIYA QUEST TO DREAM.  Similar type to 1 above and yes, he moved like a dream when he settled.  Nice head and expression.  Reachy neck flowing into good withers.  Excellent shoulder placement.  Good tight elbows.  Just lost out to the maturity of 1.

Third – Duynhoven’s  DALVUIGOLD DUNCAN.  Good all round puppy with good bone and substance.  Pleasing head with kind expression.  Sturdy body.  Good neck and shoulders.  Slightly hooked tail.  Moved well on balanced free stride.

MINOR PUPPY DOG

First – Counsell’s  KAPARLA YEAH BABY.   Nicely balanced outline with scope which I like. Love his type.  Gorgeous head with so much work in it.  Strong, reachy neck flowing into good shoulders.  Excellent depth of brisket.  Strong over the loin.  Excellent width of thigh and stifle angulation.  A little weak in his right hock and needs to settle on the move.

Second – Moore & Frederick’s  HARI GOVINDA KRISHNA OF SQUIRRELSMEAD  (IMP U.K.) In many ways similar type to 1 above.  A bit more daylight showing underneath, but once he drops into himself he will challenge the best.  Beautiful head with good dark points.  Soft, kind expression.  Needs to tighten in front but this should come with age.  Strong, positive movement in both directions.

Third – Davis’s  TAMESIS UNIQUE SAGITARIAN.  Good head and typical expression.  Cobby, short coupled body with strong topline.  Good width of thigh.  Very settled on the move.  Not quite as well balanced as 1 and 2.

PUPPY DOG

First – Coleman’s ALNCLAIR PIT STOP BROCK  This was a close decision between 1 and 2 and on checking the catalogue of course they are litter brothers.  Pit Stop won on quarters and better substance.  Short in coupling, well-ribbed, good head and ear set.  Kind typical expression. Good angles at both ends.   Good bone and feet. Strong hocks; moved with drive and purpose. Nice overall type.

Second – McGrath’s  ALNCLAIR GILLYS HERO.  Longer cast than 1.  One of the best movers on the day.  Good head with gentle expression.  Strong level topline.  Excellent front assembly. Needs to fill out but plenty of bone. Good strong hocks.  Lovely type.

Third – Parkridge Knls.  PARKRIDGE BEYOND BELIEF.  Smaller than 1 and 2 and fine in bone. Good head proportion but would prefer darker eye.  Level topline and good bend of stifle.   Excelled on the move.  Nice type but would prefer much more of him.

JUNIOR DOG

First – Brown’s  PIARKI THE  PERFECT STAR.  He is pretty perfect apart from falling slightly away at the croup, but there is no doubt he is a quality animal who has such positive movement. So much work in this head and has that soft appealing expression.  Excellent neck and shoulders, good upper arm.  Strong firm body properties with good substance.  Loved his type and ring presence.  Seemed to be enjoying himself.

Second – Smith & Clark’s  GOLDFLEECE  KNOCK ON WOOD.  Another super mover who lacks a little in substance for me.  Loved his head and expression.  Super balanced outline.  Strong, well-developed quarters.  Nicely made all over.  Think he could go all day on the move.

Third – Morrison’s  GOLDEN ROSE-BAYS DRUMMER BOY (Imp Belg)  Nicely stood up but let himself down on the move today.  Lovely type with kind, soft expression.  Excellent shoulders and upper arm.  Strong, level topline: well angulated quarters.

INTERMEDIATE DOG

First – List’s   SAMBINDOR SIR EDWARD.  Loved this dog’s type and headpiece. Gorgeous head with so much chiselling. Soft kind expression. Good deep body. Strong quarters and hocks which he used so efficiently to cover the ground. Well angulated at front and rear. Would like to see slightly more trimming to neck. Should have a promising future with his overall quality.

Second –A.E. Smith’s  CH. STANROPH SHARED ASSETS.  Another one full of quality. Good height to length proportions giving a perfectly balanced outline. Super head qualities. Excellent shoulders; good spring of rib. A little careless with his elbows on the move. Very stylish.

Third – Forbes  FERNFALL TANGO WITH ME  Pale dog with wavy coat.  Presents a very balanced outline. Perhaps a little “cheeky” in head for me. Would like to see him carrying a little more weight. Strong neck flowing into good shoulders. Good depth of brisket. Strong quarters which he used to motor round the ring. Excellent forward reach.

STATE BRED DOG.

First – Hillyer’s  CH.  WYANDRA AUTUMN DAZE.  Really dark coated dog who won this class easily on balance and style. Good head with typical expression. Mature, strong body. Strong hocks which he used so efficiently.

Second – Brice’s  COOINDA GOLDEN DESTINY.  Lighter made than 1. Good head and expression. Excellent topline. Well developed quarters. Moved well on balanced free strides. Balanced outline.

Third - Koschade’s  BOOLAROO ERROL FLYNN.  Poorly presented. For me his head was his best feature. Strong body. Moved a little too fast for me.

AUSTRALIAN BRED DOG.

First – Thompson’s  CH. CHALEUR CODE OV SILENCE.   This boy was the star of the day. He possesses all the qualities combined with soundness and style. Excellent headpiece with dark intelligent eye. Super outline which is balance personified. Strong reachy neck flowing into good withers and excellent shoulder placement. Good straight legs and bone. Tabletop topline. Strong over loin and well ribbed. Well angled and muscled quarters. Moved a dream on effortless free strides. Not in full coat but could not be denied.    C.C  &  B.I.S.

Second – Morrison’s  CH. KAPARLA NONEBUT THEBRAVE  Another one with super outline and great balance. Good head with intelligent expression but would prefer to see slightly darker eye.Super forehand with length of upper arm. Excellent bend of stifle. Moved well in both directions and with style.

Third – Clark’s  CH. NARAGOLD MERLIN.  Smaller than 1st and 2nd but well balanced. Very typical honest Golden who excels on the move. Good head with kind expression. Firm body properties.

OPEN .DOG.

First – Dulke’s   CH FANTANGO AFTER THE REIGN. Good sized scopey dog. Good overall outline. There is much good work in this head and he possesses a kind expression. Excellent forehand with quarters to match. Strong topline. Covered the ground with ease. RES C.C

Second – Molnar’s  XANTHOS FLETCHER CHRISTIAN (IMP U.K.) Smaller type than 1. I would like him bigger all over. Pleasing head with intelligent expression. Excellent shoulder and upper arm assembly. Moved  “a real treat”. In superb coat.

Third – Fall’s  CH. TULZEAN AUTUMN TANGO.  Smaller than I really prefer and needs more substance for me. Lovely head with kind expression. Adequate front assembly, strong quarters and hocks which he used to cover the ground with ease.

VETERAN DOG.

First – Harrowfield’s  GR.CH. GOLDOG ALPINE HIGHLAND.  Ten and a half years old and a real credit to his owner. He possesses a superb outline and is carrying the right amount of weight for his age. Good head with kind expression. Excellent topline and strong over the loin. Moved effortlessly. Loved his type and balance.

Second – Moore’s  CH. ERINDERRY FIRECRACKER OF GLENAVIS  (IMP U.K.)  Large pale dog who possesses many excellent qualities.  Very much the type of head which I like; so much work in it. Not in the best of coats and short of tummy feathering. Moved well in both directions for his eight years.

Third – Koschade’s  CH. GOLDJESTER OSCAR.  For me he lacked quality. Good head and substance. Moved O.K.

NEUTER  DOG.

CH. GOLDENFIRE SIR GWILYM ET.  Loved his “old-fashioned” Golden type. Beautiful head, soft expression. Mature body with good substance. Moved well for his eleven years.

.......................................................................................................................................

BABY PUPPY BITCH.  Just loved judging this class as there were so many promising babies.

First - Sernecki’s  PIARKI  MORNING MELODY..What a “show-off” she was! She was totally balanced for her age. Beautiful head and expression. Hard to fault at this stage.  Very stylish on the move. Very promising.

Second – Ashiya Knls  ASHIYA DREAM COME TRUE.  Super outline with good deep body. Excellent head and expression. Good bone. Super quarters. Stylish sound mover. Must have a bright future.

Third – Alexander’s  ACACIAN COUNTESSA.  Another quality one who has an excellent forehand. So much work in this head. Good substance. Moved with confidence and style.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH.

First – Sernecki’s   MONTEGO SUMMER SKYE.  Mature pale puppy with lots to offer. Excellent head with so much chiselling. Excellent forehand. Strong body with good substance. Strong hocks which she used well to motor round the ring with style.

Second – Foster’s  JUSTLEY CUTELY CURVY.  Sweet well made bitch who seemed to be suffering from “cold tail” and looked to be in a bit of pain. Super balanced outline. Gorgeous head with feminine expression. Moved with drive and style.

Third – Smith’s  SEADUEL  CHORUS LINE.  Her outline was slightly spoiled by the fact she is a little short in the neck. Super shoulders. Pleasing head with typical expression. Moved soundly in both directions.

PUPPY BITCH.

First – Goldshyne Knls  GOLDSHYNE WHIZZ FIZZ.  Loved this bitch’s type but would like to see a bit more height and substance to her. Beautiful head with intelligent eye. Well angulated quarters. Moved well on balanced free strides.

Second – Goldsirius Knls  FANTANGO SHALL WE DANCE.  Good sized pale bitch who is well angulated at both ends. Good substance and strong topline. Her expression lacked a little sparkle but her head is pleasing. Good bend of stifle. Moved soundly but could have done with a little more enthusiasm.

Third – Brook’s  PIQUEACE PRINCESS PRATIMA.  Smaller made pale bitch who has excellent forehand. Sweet feminine head with typical expression. Strong neck which flows into withers. Would like to see a better bend of stifle, which slightly spoiled her outline. Moved soundly.

JUNIOR BITCH

First – Thompson’s  DEWMIST SIVERLING (IMP.SWE)  Pale, scopey bitch who excels on the move .Beautiful head with good dark points. Good depth of brisket and substance. Strong over the loin. Table-top topline. When moving she has so much style and elegance. One for the future.

Second –A.E. Smith’s  GOLDFLEECE ASH WOOD.  Shorter cast than 1. Excellent head properties. Good layback of shoulder. Strong quarters. Moved well in both directions.

Third –Alex  Smith’s   GOLDMARTINI WILD CHILD.  Loved her overall type but she let herself down today by being sluggish on the move. Good head with alert expression. Super forehand and depth of brisket. She is quality all through but has to learn to move.

INTERMEDIATE BITCH.

First – Hobbelen’s  ACACIAN BELLA DONNA.  She possesses that lovely “old-fashioned” golden head with soft expression. Good height to length proportions. Would like more substance. Moved with style and purpose.

Second – Joseph’s  BARADAV DREAM COME TRUE.  Well made scopey bitch with everything in the right place. Well defined head. Good shoulder placement. Good depth of brisket. Used her strong hocks to drive on the move.

Third – Goldshyne Knls.  DOBRO  GOLD SHINE.  Loved her overall type. Good size and substance. Presents a very balanced picture. A little careless with her elbows on the move. Strong rear movement.

STATE BRED BITCH.

First - Goodall/Rammell’s   CH. SAVANETA FIRE N ICE.  Won on overall balance. Could do with more work in her head for me. Great forehand. Strong firm body, carrying just the right amount of weight.  Moved with style and purpose.

Second – Goodall/Rammell’s   SAVANETA HEARTS ON FIRE.  Another one from the same kennel who possesses such fine balance. Good straight front with good bone and substance. Pleasing head with intelligent expression. Strong reachy neck. Covered the ground with ease.

Third – Bourn’s  BOURNBEAU JUDDS HILL.  Good head with soft kind expression.. A little short in neck for me. Good substance with well muscled quarters. Strong hocks which she used well to drive from the rear.

AUSTRALIAN BRED BITCH.

First – Handley’s  GILTEDGE FLORIDA STORM.  She simply oozes quality from nose to tail. Very hard to fault in any way. Possesses such good balance. Super forehand with quarters to match. In between there lies a well ribbed deep body, completing a lovely picture. Excellent head with true golden expression.. Very stylish sound mover. One out of the “top drawer”. CC  Lost out only to her outstanding son for B.I.S.

Second – Grierson’s  KAPARLA LIVE THE DREAM  RCC.  Pale scopey balanced bitch who possesses all the necessary qualities. Loved her type. Kind soft expression. Firm body. Moved well with excellent forward reach. Another quality bitch.

OPEN BITCH.

First – McGrath’s  ALNCLAIR ANN TICIPATION.  One of the nicest heads of the day with so much work in it. Good size and substance.  Excellent forehand. Good bend of stifle and strong quarters. Used her strong hocks to push off from the rear. Excellent forward reach.

Second – Wallis’s  CH. GOLDOG ALPINE GABRIELLAI.  Smaller, darker bitch who has a sweet head and typical expression. I would like to see more of her all over. Moved soundly and with purpose.

Third – Hillyer’s  CH. WYANDRA HUGS N KISSES.  Nice to see her teeth in such good condition at ten years. Very much lacking in coat and feathering. Moved soundly.

NEUTER BITCH.

First – Goodall’s  CH.CHIPALA HAVE A LITTLE FAITH.  Loved her “old fashioned” Golden head and expression. Good firm body and balance. Moved with style.

Second – Frederick’s  YAQUI’S BUNDLE OF JOY (IMP.USA).  Lovely outgoing temperament and very alert. Well boned. Too short in the neck for me. Moved  O.K.

Third – Shegog’s BOURNBEAU AUSSIE SHEILA.  Undershot bite. Good temperament and bone. Moved O.K.

Those of you who had a fourth place that the judge made notes on will be sad to learn that the critique arrived with only three places of critique for all classes.
